S. Cecilia’s, Bickleigh Down CofE Primary School, Woolwell

In the name of the +Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

The Lord be with you

and also with you

My dear friends in Christ, a warm welcome to you this morning as we gather to worship Almighty God in word and sacrament, in play and in prayer, in thought, word and deed. For some of you this might be the first time you have come to S. Cecilia’s to worship and on behalf of that community on this their Patronal Festival, I welcome you here and the unique way in which we worship at S. Cecilia’s.

We pray with special intention for the life, work and witness of this parish, praying especially for the community that gathers here at S. Cecilia’s, for Bickleigh Down Primary School, it’s Governors and it’s witness.

We run the race set before us, surrounded by a great crowd of witnesses. Therefore let us lay aside every weight, and sin, bringing them to Our Lord Jesus Christ in penitence and faith…

The Collect

Let us pray

Heavenly Father,

whose blessed Son was revealed to destroy the works of the devil

and to make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life:

grant that we, having this hope,

may purify ourselves even as he is pure;

that when he shall appear in power and great glory

we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom;

where he is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

First Reading

Daniel 12.1-3

A reading from the book of Daniel

In the third year of King Cyrus a word was revealed to Daniel. 1‘At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. 2Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.’

Second Reading

Hebrews 10.11-14(15-18)19-25

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews

11Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. 12But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, ‘he sat down at the right hand of God’, 13and since then has been waiting ‘until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.’ 14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. 15And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying,

16‘This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds’

17he also adds,

‘I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.’

18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. 19Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that he opened for us. through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Gospel

Mark 13.1-8

1As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!’ 2Then Jesus asked him, ‘Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.’

3When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?’

5Then Jesus began to say to them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, “I am he!” and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.’

Homily Notes:

Background music: Life on Earth Video with Sigur Ros

  • People are Living Stones of the Temple of God
  • Create prayer stones and build not a wall, but a temple of prayer to the Lord
  • You can write/draw a prayer inside (which later someone else might pray)
    • Or you can just pray onto the paper. God knows whatever you do.
    • Sigur Ros Video during Make
    • Use children to help build the temple of prayer
    • Jesus speaks in the Gospel of the temple being torn down
      • But this was not this temple, rather it was the ancient temple (cf AD70 destruction of Jerusalem) and his own body
      • Which in three days would be rebuilt by God, resurrected by God
      • There is a danger that the building can become more important than the people it houses
      • Jesus spoke of people’s faith being like a whitewashed tomb – beautiful but of no use in a living faith
      • So we will not knock down this temple of prayer
        • Rather we will move it out from this place into other places and grow other houses of prayer
        • Children to distribute/scatter stones to other people for them to take home and pray over/with during the week
        • For Christ is our great high priest
          • He lives to intercede for us
          • His sacrifice of himself (once offered) as a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction of himself once offereddoes away with the need for the temple
            • Hence why that great temple can be torn down – it is irrelevant
            • On this altar, we do not repeat Christ’s sacrifice, but it brings that once-and-for-all-time sacrifice into our midst
  • It is faith – cleaned by Christ on the Cross and washed by the waters of baptism which enables us to enter the household of God
  • It is not a whitewashed faith, an empty repetition
  • This about the faith this way: Creed Video

Baptismal Creed (will be used throughout Advent)

Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist?

I believe and trust in God the Father

Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again?

I believe and trust in God the Son

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world?

I believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit

This is the faith of the Church

This is our faith.

We believe and trust in one God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Peace

We are fellow citizens with the Saints of the household of God

Let us pursue all that makes for peace and builds up our common life

The peace of the Lord be always with you

and also with you

Let us offer one another a sign of peace

Pray, my brothers and sisters, that this our sacrifice may be acceptable to God the almighty Father.

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his Church.

Prayer over the gifts

Lord, we offer you these gifts of your own creation

As we offer ourselves

May they become for us, sacramental signs of our salvation

and bring us to your Kingdom. Amen

Preface

The Lord be with you

and also with you

Lift up your hearts

We lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

It is right to give thanks and praise

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,

always and everywhere to give you thanks,

holy Father, almighty and eternal God,

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.

We rejoice in the glorious splendour of your majesty

for you have given us a share with Cecilia, patron of this Church,

in the inheritance of the saints in light.

In the darkness of this passing age

they proclaim the glory of your kingdom.

Chosen as lights in the world,

they surround our steps as we journey on

towards the city of eternal light

where they sing the everlasting song of triumph.

In communion with angels and archangels

and all who have served you on earth

and worship you now in heaven,

we raise our voices to proclaim your glory,

for ever praising you and saying:

Holy, Holy Holy…

Eucharistic Prayer B

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;
grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,
and according to your holy will,
these gifts of bread and wine
may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed,
took bread and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take, eat; this is my body

which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper
he took the cup and gave you thanks;
he gave it to them, saying:
Drink this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for all

for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of me.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith…

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross,
his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins

of the whole world;
rejoicing in his mighty resurrection

and glorious ascension,
and looking for his coming in glory,
we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice

of praise and thanksgiving,
we bring before you this bread and this cup
and we thank you for counting us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people
and gather into one in your kingdom
all who share this one bread and one cup,
so that we, in the company of

Our Blesséd Lady, St. Cecilia, patron of this Church, St. Anne, St Edward,

andall the saints,
may praise and glorify you for ever,
through Jesus Christ our Lord;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father,
for ever and ever.

All    Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

We break this bread

to share in the body of Christ

Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share the one bread

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace

Come not because you are strong,

but because you are weak.

Come not because any goodness of your own

but because you need mercy and help.

Come because you love the Lord a little

and would like to love him more.

Come because he loves you

and gave his life for you.

This is the lamb of God

who takes away the sin of the world.

Blesséd are those who are called to his supper

Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

Prayer after Communion

Gracious Lord, in this holy sacrament,

you give substance to our hope:

bring us at the last to that fullness of life for which we long;

through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen
