Corpus Christi 2012

The wind blew hard, the rain fell, and yet 31 people ventured up onto the moorside to visit S. Edward, King & Martyr, Shaugh Prior for the celebration of Corpus Christi, which for a first one, I didn’t think was too bad…

Homily:

Corpus Christi 2012 Sung Gospel and Homily

My thanks to Fr Tim for singing the Gospel – something I could never do!

Feast of Corpus Christi – Mass with Benediction

Introit

Lord enthroned in heavenly splendour,
First-begotten from the dead,
Thou alone, our strong defender,
Liftest up thy people’s head.
Alleluia, alleluia,
Jesu, true and living bread!

Here our humblest homage pay we;
Here in loving reverence bow;
Here for Faith’s discernment pray we,
Lest we fail to know thee now.
Alleluia, alleluia,
Thou art here, we ask not how.

Though the lowliest form doth veil thee.
As of old in Bethlehem,
Here as there thine angels hail thee,
Branch and flower of Jesse’s stem,
Alleluia, alleluia
We in worship join with them.

Paschal Lamb, thine offering, finished
Once for all when thou wast slain,
In its fullness undiminished
Shall for evermore remain,
Alleluia, alleluia
Cleansing souls from every stain.

Life-imparting heavenly Manna,
Stricken Rock with streaming side,
Heaven and earth with loud hosanna
Worship thee, the Lamb who died,
Alleluia, alleluia,
Risen, ascended, glorified
Gathering

In the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit be with you all
And also with you

The priest introduces the Mass and calls us to conversion as we remember sins and ask the forgiveness of God

The Penitential Rite

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you,
through our own fault,
in thought, and word, and deed,
and in what we have left undone.
We are heartily sorry, and repent of all our sins.
For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.

Lord have mercy Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy Christ have mercy
Lord have mercy Lord have mercy

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Gloria

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

Greening, A People’s Eucharist

Collect

Let us pray to the Lord who gives himself in the Eucharist
that this sacrament may bring us salvation and peace.

Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you that in this wonderful sacrament
you have given us the memorial of your passion:
grant us so to reverence the sacred mysteries of your body and blood that we may know within ourselves
and show forth in our lives the fruits of your redemption;
for you are alive and reign with the Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

The Word of God

1 Corinthians 11.23-26

Beloved: 23I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 25In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Gradual

Soul of my Saviour sanctify my breast,
Body of Christ, be thou my saving guest,
Blood of my Saviour, bathe me in thy tide,
wash me with waters gushing from thy side.

Strength and protection may thy passion be,
O blessèd Jesus, hear and answer me;
deep in thy wounds, Lord, hide and shelter me,
so shall I never, never part from thee.

Guard and defend me from the foe malign,
in death’s dread moments make me only thine;
call me and bid me come to thee on high
where I may praise thee with thy saints for ay.

Words: Latin, 14th C; trans. anonymous
Music: Anima Christi, Maher

Alleluia, alleluia.
I am the living bread which has come down from heaven, says
the Lord. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.
Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

The Lord be with you
And also with you

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
Glory to you, O Lord

John 6.51-58

Jesus said: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live for ever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you can eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live for ever.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord
Praise to Christ our Lord.

Homily – Fr. Simon Rundell SCP

Creed

We believe in God Almighty,
He who made both heaven and earth;
I believe he is our Father
And through him we have our birth.
I believe and trust in Jesus,
God the Father’s only Son;
I believe he came to save us
For he loves us, everyone.

And I love his Mother Mary,
For through her my Lord was born;
Born to suffer death and sorrow
Born to rise on Easter morn.
I believe he lives for ever
Death for him was not the end;
He returned to God his Father
That his Spirit he might send.

I believe his Holy Spirit
Lives within the Church today,
And he gives his truth and guidance
So that we might know the way.
I believe when life is over
Christ will take us home with him;
And in joy we’ll live for ever
Evermore in peace. Amen.

Tune: Blaenwern

Intercessions

We pray to the Lord.

Lord, listen to the prayers of your people,
gathered at your table.
In faith we pray:
we pray to you our God.

Here, where we celebrate how Christ gave us his body
to be our spiritual food,
listen as we pray for his body the Church,
spread throughout the world …
In faith we pray:
we pray to you our God.

Here, where we recognize the presence of Christ,
who takes away the sin of the world,
listen as we pray for that world
and for its peoples for whom his blood was shed …
In faith we pray:
we pray to you our God.

Here, where we come together as Christ gathered with his friends
to give us this meal of holy fellowship,
listen as we pray for all whom you have given us,
our friends and all whose lives are joined with ours …
In faith we pray:
we pray to you our God.

Here, where we remember the night of Christ’s agony and trial,
listen as we pray for all who share his sufferings
through fear or pain or distress of many kinds …
In faith we pray:
we pray to you our God.

Here, where we join our praises with the whole company of heaven,
listen as we pray for all who have trusted Christ’s promise
to raise up on the last day those who eat his flesh and
drink his blood …
In faith we pray:
we pray to you our God.

Lord, satisfy our hunger with the food that lasts,
the bread of God which comes down from heaven
and gives life to the world,
Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Amen.

The Peace

Lord Jesus Christ, you feed us on our journey through life with yourself,
the living bread come down from heaven.
Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church,
and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom.
Where you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen

The peace of the Lord be with you always
And also with you.

Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

Offertory

Let us talents and tongues employ,
reaching out with a shout of joy.
Bread is broken, the wine is poured,
Christ is spoken and seen and heard.
Jesus lives again, earth can breathe again,
pass the Word around: loaves abound!

Christ is able to make us one.
At the table he sets the tone,
teaching people to live to bless,
love in word and in deed express.
Jesus lives again, earth can breathe again,
pass the Word around: loaves abound!

Jesus calls us in, sends us out
bearing fruit in a world of doubt,
gives us love to tell, bread to share.
God (Immanuel) everywhere!
Jesus lives again, earth can breathe again,
pass the Word around: loaves abound!

The Preparation of the gifts

Pray, my brothers and sisters, that this our sacrifice may be acceptable to God the almighty Father.
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his Church.

Lord, may the bread and cup we offer bring your Church the unity and peace they signify. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.
Amen

Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you

And also with you

Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give thanks and praise.

Father, all-powerful and ever-living God,
we do well always and everywhere to give You thanks
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

At the last supper,
as He sat at table with His apostles,
He offered Himself to You as the spotless Lamb,
the acceptable gift that gives You perfect praise.
Christ has given us this memorial of His passion
to bring us its saving power until the end of time.

In this great sacrament You feed Your people
and strengthen them in holiness,
so that the human family may come to walk in the light of one faith,
in one communion of love.
We come then to this wonderful sacrament to be fed at Your table
and grow into the likeness of the risen Christ.

Earth unites with heaven to sing the new song of creation
as we adore and praise you for ever:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;
grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,
and according to your holy will,
these gifts of bread and wine
may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed,
took bread and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper
he took the cup and gave you thanks;
he gave it to them, saying:
Drink this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of me.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith…

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross,
his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;
rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,
and looking for his coming in glory,
we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,
we bring before you this bread and this cup
and we thank you for counting us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people
and gather into one in your kingdom
all who share this one bread and one cup,
so that we, in the company of
Our Blesséd Lady, St. Anne, St. Cecilia, St Edward, and all the saints,
may praise and glorify you for ever,
through Jesus Christ our Lord;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father,
for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

With thankfulness and joy, we pray as Jesus taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
now and for ever. Amen.

We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Grant us your peace

Invitation

The Priest holds the consecrated Host & invites the people to communion:

This is the living bread come down from heaven, Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

Communion Antiphon

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood will live in me and I in him, says the Lord. (John 6:57)

All are welcome to this holy altar to receive the sacraments of salvation or its blessing. Please bring this sheet with you if you would prefer a blessing

Communion Hymn

Sweet Sacrament Divine,
hid in thy earthly home,
lo! round thy lowly shrine,
with suppliant hearts we come;
Jesus, to thee our voice we raise,
in songs of love and heartfelt praise,
sweet sacrament divine, sweet sacrament divine.

Sweet sacrament of peace,
dear home of every heart,
where restless yearlings cease,
and sorrows all depart
there in thine ear all trustfully
We tell our tale of misery,
sweet sacrament of peace, sweet sacrament of peace.

Sweet sacrament of rest,
Ark from the ocean’s roar,
within thy shelter blest
soon may we reach the shore,
save us, for still the tempest raves;
save, lest we sink beneath the waves
sweet sacrament of rest, sweet sacrament of rest.

Sweet sacrament divine,
earth’s light and jubilee,
in thy far depths doth shine
thy Godhead’s majesty;
sweet light, so shine on us, we pray
that earthly joys may fade away,
sweet sacrament divine, sweet sacrament divine.

The Prayer after Communion

Let us pray

Lord Jesus Christ,
you give us your body and blood in the Eucharist
as a sign that even now we share your life.
May we come to share it completely in the kingdom
where you live for ever and ever.
Amen.

Before Benediction

Graham Kendrick “Here is Bread”

The Blessing is given by the act of Benediction itself.

Exposition

The Throne is placed on the altar. The 10 Tea Lights are lit. As the monstrance is placed on the altar, the bell is rung and everyone kneels. Incense is added.

O saving victim! opening wide
The gate of heaven to man below,
Our foes press hard on every side-
Thine aid supply, thy strength bestow.

All praise and thanks to thee ascend
For evermore, blest One in Three;
O grant us life that shall not end
In our true native land with thee. Amen

Adoration

While the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar, we spend sometime in silent prayer. There may be scripture readings, hymns and prayers from time to time.

Blessed, Praised, Hallowed and Adored,
Be Our Lord Jesus Christ on his throne of Glory
And in the most holy sacrament of the altar

The priest may lead the congregation in these two classic prayers of adoration at any point

Benediction Prayers

LOTS OF SILENCE

Lord Jesus Christ, present before us in the most holy sacrament of the altar
you are the sun that always rises but never sets.
You are the source of all life,
creating and sustaining every living thing.
You are the source of all food, material and spiritual,
nourishing us in both body and soul.
You are the light which dispels the clouds of error and doubt
and goes before me every hour of the day,
guiding my thoughts and my actions.
May I walk in your light,
Be nourished by your food,
be sustained by your mercy,
and be warmed by your love.

Erasmus, 16th Century

We pray for those afflicted by war, enmity and oppression. We pray for those who are burdened by unfair trade and unethical business. We pray for those who seek to bring peace, aid and justice, praying especially for Her Majesty’s Forces serving throughout the world.
O most sacred redeemer,
Give us wisdom to recognise you,
Intelligence to understand you,
Diligence to seek you,
Patience to wait for you,
Eyes to see you,
Hearts to meditate on you
And lives to proclaim you,
Through the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Benedict of Nursia 6th C
We pray that we might be Christ’s hands and feet, eyes and lips so that through our ministry and witness, Christ may be known in this Mission Community, and as we are fed by this most holy sacrament, we may be drawn closer to you, and empowered to reach out to others.
Let everyone be struck with fear,
The whole world tremble,
And the heavens exult
When Christ, the Son of the living God,
Is present on the altar [in the hands of a Priest!]
O wonderful loftiness
And stupendous dignity!
O sublime humility!
O humble sublimity!
The Lord of the universe,
God and the Son of God,
So humbles Himself
That he hides Himself
For our salvation
Under an ordinary piece of bread!

cont.

See the humility of God, brothers and sisters
And pour out your hearts before Him
Humble yourselves
That you may be exalted by Him!
Hold back nothing of yourelves for yourselves,
That he who gives himself totally to you
May receive you totally!

Francis of Assisi, 13th C

We pray for the needs of this Community, for the sick and the dying, for the burdened, the afflicted and the anxious. We hold them in our hearts and up to you, Lord and most especially we pray for those who have no-one else to pray for them. We pray that God’s healing hand will come upon them and bring each light, refreshment and peace.
ANIMA CHRISTI

Soul of Christ, sanctify me,
Body of Christ, save me,
Blood of Christ, inebriate me,
Water from the side of Christ, wash me,
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesu, hear me,
Within thy wounds hide me.
Suffer me not to be separated from thee.
From the malicious enemy defend me.
In the hour of my death call me
And bid me come to thee
That with thy saints I may praise thee
for all eternity. Amen

S. PATRICK’S BREASTPLATE

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

At the end of prayers and adoration, the Divine Praises are used:

THE DIVINE PRAISES
Repeat each line after the priest

Blessed be God.
Blessed be his holy Name.
Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man.
Blessed be the name of Jesus.
Blessed be his most Sacred Heart.
Blessed be his most Precious Blood.
Blessed be Jesus in the most holy Sacrament of the Altar
Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.
Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.
Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception
Blessed be her glorious Assumption.
Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. ;
Blessed be S.Joseph, her spouse most chaste.
Blessed be God in his Angels and in his Saints.

Benediction

Incense is added. All prostrate at the first two lines of Tantum Ergo, then rise to kneeling.

Therefore we, before him bending,
This great Sacrament revere:
Types and shadows have there ending,
For the newer rite is here;
Faith, our outward sense befriending,
Makes the inward vision clear.

Glory let us give, and blessing
To the Father and the Son.
Honour, might, and praise addressing,
While eternal ages run;
Ever to his love confessing,
Who, from both, with both is one. Amen

The priest stands, everyone else remains kneeling

Thou gavest them bread from heaven. Alleluia
Containing in itself all sweetness. Alleluia

Let us pray.

Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us the Eucharist
as the memorial of your suffering and death.
May our worship of this sacrament of your body and blood
help us to experience the salvation you won for us
and the peace of the kingdom, where you
live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The humeral veil is positioned. The priest makes the sign of the cross over the people with the Blessed Sacrament as the bells are rung 3 times. It is traditional to make the sign of the Cross as you are blessed by the Sacrament

Reposition

After Benediction the Blessed Sacrament is placed in the tabernacle. A bell is rung and we stand to sing the recessional hymn.

Recessional

Sent forth by God’s blessing,
our true faith confessing,
the people of God from this dwelling take leave.
The supper is ended.
Oh, now be extended
the fruits of this service in all who believe.

The fruit of Christ’s teaching,
receptive souls reaching,
shall blossom in action for God and for all.
His grace did invite us,
his love shall unite us
to work for God’s kingdom and answer his call.
With praise and thanksgiving
to God ever-living
the tasks of our everyday life we will face.
Our faith ever sharing,
in love ever caring,
embracing the children of each tribe and race.

With your feast you feed us,
with your light now lead us,
unite us as one in this life that we share.
Then may all the living
with praise and thanksgiving
give honour to Christ and his name that we bear
